The World Is Yours

The children of Organic Detroit learned Earth Day values and enjoyed cookies on “Bring Your Kids to Work Day” 2011, themed “The World Is Yours.”

Both Earth Day and Kids Day were hugely successful this year. We started the week off by donating 150 old CRT monitors, to Goodwill to be completely reused and recycled. This involved getting each 40 lb. monitor – 6,000 lbs. in all – from the 2nd floor storage area to the parking lot. Special thanks to our Organic volunteers, recognizable by their big biceps. Seriously, it was back breaking work, but done very generously for a good cause.

Next up, Kids Day. The day started with breakfast and a discussion about different items to recycle and reuse. We had a “kids wall” where the children could draw or write their ideas on how to help protect our world. We decorated terra cotta pots and chose veggie or flower seeds to plant in them. Fire Marshall Pete from the Bloomfield Township Fire Department gave a presentation. After a quick lunch break, Dan the Creature Man showed up with a large selection of animals to teach us about while we munched on fresh popcorn. Since it was Bring Your Kids to TO WORK Day, the different department leads shared what they do here at Organic. Then, because we didn’t feel we had provided enough sugar, we decorated “flower” cookies, which were eaten immediately.

Needless to say, it was a very busy Thursday, full of food, fun and education. Good thing beer bash comes Friday!
