With the advancement of sensor-laden networked vehicles, the future of automobile design is converging with interaction design. Fiat's eco:Drive is a great example.
Now Nissan is developing an iPhone app for their upcoming electronic car that allows the user to check the battery level, among other things, remotely. This is a great avenue for digital agencies to collaborate closer with their auto industry clients and open up new business opportunities.
PCWorld talks about how Nissan is building the app to promote energy efficiency:
"The application [...] links to the car's IT system to check the status of the Lithium Ion batteries that power the car. Using it, owners will be able to monitor charging of their cars while away from the vehicles. The system could come in handy, for example, when cars are parked at public charging stations and owners want to fully charge the batteries before driving away. [...] The information also includes the current temperature inside the car and that ties into a second function of the application: remote control of the car's air conditioning system. That might sound like a random and perhaps strange function but it's all in the name of energy efficiency."Editor's note: Nissan continues to break the mold with customer interaction as Craig Ritchie first talked about here. Could this be the next phase in building their community of eco-conscious prospects?

Digital agencies could have a future in all design as things become more and more networked. I just read this article in fastcompany about creating power within your own house
http://www.fastcompany.com/magazine/137/beyond-the-grid.html
imagine all the cool data visualisations and sales techniques you could do with this. You could create a visual energy ebay whereby users create profiles and use cool creative data visualisations as their advertising to sell extra energy their house has created
