In today’s New York Times, David Brooks writes an excellent piece on how the at-our-fingertips data engine is affecting our personal relationship with information. Important reading for those of us creating more opportunities for human beings to find, filter, and, ultimately, not need to remember stuff. Photo credit: Gaetan Lee

At the same time, humanity has gotten along fine for a good long while now using only the crude matter in our heads and despite our mistakes, we’ve made it this far. The creature comforts we’ve been creating for ourselves since day 1 are well and good, but there are consequences to these dependencies and while Mr. Brooks can shrug them off with a, “It’s merely my autonomy that I’m losing”, there are many people who are frightened and alienated by such notions. We, working in the digital realm, would do well to consider both the consequences of our creations and the things we find ourselves dependent upon before happily advocating the “nirvana” Mr. Brooks finds himself so enthused with.
