The advertising potential in Second Life is massive, especially when you consider that every user can be shown different ads according their IP address and previous searches. I think Google understands this, and that it was part of their motive behind acquiring AdScape.
Now here's the real clincher: what if Google didn't buy Second Life but rivaled it? What if Google Earth displaced Linden world as the primary virtual environment for users? All of sudden, our second lives would exist in a parallel to our first ones.

As an end user, I hope Google does acquire SL in the near future. The concept of SL is as exceptional as all the other Google products I currently enjoy, so I have faith in their ability to maintain the vision. Its now time to step up though and get 'er done. The population of inworld residents has surpassed Linden Labs ability to service it, and its time for the big boys to take it over now. With all due respect to Phillip and Mr. Ebay and Mr. Amazon (wink wink) its time to let go and let SL become what you envisioned it would be.

Well my guess is they will finalised and announce the new Google World. When Google bought YouTube it was because it already had 46% of the market. Although SL is quite a smash with the Medias, it does not have yet such a stronghold on the market. But I could be wrong…

Hi 3Minds,
I would hope so because it would help SL gets better by bringing much needed ressources for LL to fix bugs.
Also, better monetize SL by placing AdWords on all 3D billboards of the metaverse!
Plus, the bonus of real terrestrial imagery from Google Earth mapped on top of the land!
Or am I dreaming awaken?
