Pimp My Email

Dotster A new use for a old business model: custom domain name registration.  Dotster, one of the largest domain registration and hosting services companies, is repackaging its services as "Pimped Emails".

For $7.95, you can buy the email forwarding portion of a custom domain name like 50centarmy.com.   The marketing pitch is aimed squarely at the MySpace crowd - for just $2 more, they will redirect you domain to your MySpace profile.

It's an interesting take on the evolution of custom culture - newer technologies like downloadable ringtones/ringbacks and personalized homepages have set the expectation that technology can be a reflection of your personal style.   Why shouldn't plain old email be backwards compatible as well?

I agree. And we do see the need for personalizing our statement (i.e. self expression) practically everywhere:
on the mobile arena (handset manufacturer, ringtones, ringbacks, wallpapers, avatars), on the web (avatars, email signatures), fashion, brands...
