Dog Poop Happens

Dogpoop DogLitter.com is a very entertaining microsite for a Purina product called SecondNature (litter used for training dogs). It showcases extremely funny dog confessions of “self admitted poopers.”

The microsite does a good job of offering funny and useful content for dog owners. It’s nice to see marketers offer compelling content as part of their advertising. The videos are funny, but they actually promote the product as well (now I know why my dog poops on the carpet). The site does a nice job of making clear that it’s a marketing site, but not in a way that diminishes the experience.

What drew me to the site was the banner ad. Again it’s funny and it promotes the product at the same time. The promise of a funny video is a compelling reason to click. And let’s be honest, who doesn’t want to hear about dogs talking about pooping?

Read more in today’s New York Times, which discusses about the wider landscape of sharing secrets as a marketing tactic on sites for Post-Its, Secret Deodorant, and the beautiful PostSecret Project, an ongoing community art project where people mail in anonymous secrets on one side of a homemade postcard.

Hey there. Saw you were talking about the pooper campaign. I actually work for the agency that is running this campaign and while many people are finding it funny, very few good videos have been submitted. So let your readers know to send in their own video…if it is any good, it sure stands a chance to win.
