Verizon will be the exclusive mobile provider of 2-3 minute episodes based on the character and plot universe of the ABC hit "Lost."
Dubbed the "Lost Diaries." The short form segments will feature the characters from the show based on the premise that one of the crash survivors has found a video camera among the wreckage of Flight 815. The shows, which will be more about "side content" that doesn’t directly influence the main plotline, will be independently created by the shows producers themselves, and not ABC. Considering that season 3 of Lost will take place in two parts with a hiatus in betweem, its the hope of the "Lost Diaries" producers that the mobisodes will help satiate the appetite of its obsessed fans.
13 mobisodes are planned for this fall and will be exclusive to Verizon in the mobile space. After a one week exclsuvity period, the mobisodes will be available online through the Lost web site.
Earlier this year an agreement was made between Touchstone Television and the DGA for the purposes of "Lost" mobisode production. The agreement is considered a precedent for future mobisode initiatives.
While video podcasts and mobisodes are not necessarily new, its clear that a trend is growing among the content providers of serial dramas that are based on a long story arc. Last year, Fox released a series of mobisodes for "24: Conspiracy" which was used to prime the background for season 4 of 24 in the UK. As this continues to grow, new economies will form based on mobile and portable media extensions of popular mainstream content.
