Computers are suppose to help us improve our productivity and the more powerful they get the more productive we are suppose to be. At least I have been told.
Not only are computers getting more powerful but their interfaces have been optimized for users to be constantly multitasking which is horrible for any creative work that we are using the computer for.
If you love to write but can’t get yourself into a writing mode because you have tons of icons on your desktop that are reminding you of other things you should to be doing or you have multiple instant messengers trying to get your attention I recommend you try out WriteRoom. WriteRoom turns your powerful computer into an old fashioned typewriter and creates a "distraction free writing" environment for those times you just want to write.
If only it would write posts for you!

Great idea for a program. Downloading now. It is very easy to be distracted by the icons on your desktop or in your dock with the subconscious reminders of everything else you need to.
Another program to consider, I saw it presented last week at An Event Apart in NYC, by Khoi Vinh. I think he’s still working on it.

BlockWriter also looks very interesting. I should try it out.
You went to An Event Apart, always wanted to go o one. How was it?
An Event Apart was great. I’d highly recommend it. Zeldman, Meyers, Santa-Maria were great. They also had Khoi Vinh, Tantek Celik and Aaron Gustafson.
I finally understand what Microformats are!
They had ZeFrank as a fill in speaker and I don’t think I’ve laughed so hard.
I walked away with a lot of knowledge that I’m looking forward to applying to my projects. It was all presented in a light format, and they always took questions.
