Reshuflling the deck: a presentation lesson

Dsc01640_1We just finished a meeting with the team from Facebook, the college social networking phenominon.  Clearly this is a remarkable young business – so the pitch flows pretty naturally.  What is noteworthy, however, was how the pitch was delivered.

Instead of the usual, long-winded PowerPoint presentation,  Matt Jacobson, Facebook’s market dev lead, relied on a small 6X8 steel box filled with simple cards (pictured).

There’s a  presentation lesson here. The cards were a starting point for conversation. They were interactive. We passed them around and spread them out on the table. Needless to say, we  never struggled with the projector or had to call in the AV guy.

This is a great way to introduce a company.

You have to love these guys … Here’s an excerpt from a recent Fortune Magazine article:
    “WHAT’S NEW IN THE VALLEY
    Facebook Stares Down Success
A Harvard dropout makes the grade with the primo website for college and high school students.
    By Adam Lashinsky
Mark Zuckerberg, the 21-year-old Harvard dropout and founder of Facebook, the red-hot social-networking site, is sharing his plans for building a lasting business. Considering that he already runs the ninth most highly trafficked website in the U.S. and the most buzzed-about company in Silicon Valley this side of Google, I should probably be paying closer attention. But as he drops in tidbits from his mentor, Washington Post CEO Donald Graham, about running a company for the long-term, my mind can’t help but wander—from his baby face to the golden retriever sleeping under a desk to Zuckerberg’s business card in my hand and its joyously irreverent message: “i’m ceo … bitch.”

Being a recent college grad, I can vouch for Facebook’s rapid growth and success in the world of college students…I created my profile in September of 2004, soon after the buzz began about the site. Within a matter of weeks, Facebook had become not only a household word, but a verb on my campus. The site itself is easy to use and addicting to search. Definitely an EE!
